Fanworks based on The Silmarillion

What's the Silm?

The Silmarillion is a posthumously-published work by J. R. R. Tolkien. It is essentially the history of the world that he wrote about in The Lord of the Rings, though a history with its preoccupations (the things that John wanted to write about the most).

I'll provide some links at the bottom of the page if you wish to dig into the book, the scholarship arounding it, and the study of the languages in the book. But the main point of this webpage is hosting my own fanfiction, so let's get into it.

Fortune-telling with Tengwar

Struck by the similarities of the tengwar (the main alphabet Tolkien invented for writing his constructed languages) and the futhark (the real-world ancient alphabet used for writing Norse languages), I decided to see if I could use the tengwar for one of the things the futhark are commonly used for: diviniation.

I wrote a scholarfic guide to doing so once I found out that I absolutely could and it worked incredibly well. However, that initial scholarfic format features the framing narrative of an in-universe narrator who has strong biases and a few misunderstanding about history. That was fun, but I want to create more user friendly an version of Tengwar Fortunetelling now.

It's going to take a lot of typing, coding, and editing, but the in-progress project can be found at the link below.

My Fic

Finished Works

Carin; Caruvan (I Do; I Will): One of the finest works I have ever written. Written in high language with a very low subject matter: Sick of their squabbling, gossiping, and undermining, on the night of his coronation Fingon Astaldo offers to fight every single one of the sons of Feanor, one after another, to shut their treasonous mouths for good. There's 'thee/thou', there's Quenya poetry, there's incest, there's violence.

Likest to Thee in Shape and Countenance Bright: Illogically enflamed by an attempted confrontation which he lost pathetically, Findekano begins having sexual fantasies about his lover's father. When he confesses this to his lover, they decided to try playing with it instead of hating it.

Mockingbird: Without question the most beloved fic I have ever written. Mockingbird follows Maglor, son of Feanor, on his quest to further complicate the most inexplicable interpersonal realtionships known to elvenkind. Russingon + Maglor. A quick read but, I am told, a haunting one.

My Personal Rarepair Hell: The aptly-named 'Personal Rarepair Hell' is a trilogy of fanfictions I wrote about a rarepair that I made up myself and which only I have ever written for in the fifty year existence of the Silmarillion fandom. I wasn't trying to make up a weird ship for the sake of it, I had a vision and reluctantly commited to it. I commited really hard; this thing is long, complicated, and constantly has captive readers wailing 'why is this thing so good (considering what it is)??' I don't know, but you're stuck here with me.

One can do shameful things in daylight, too: Explicit sex between Feanor, tyrant of Formenos, and his upstart (half-)nephew Fingon. Half about absolutely nasty male/male incest and half about the intolerable pressures of living as a queer outcast under puritanical facism. There's also a questionable intertextual relationship with Euripedes' Bakkhoi!

Spoils/Treasures: Spoils is about orcs retreiving and loving the handcrafted objects of dead elves. The elves, in order, are Fingon, Maeglin, and Aegnor. The orcs are Iluk, Teug, and Gris. You might like them.

The Thorn is Exceedingly Sharp: Eol/Curufin; in a contest meant to decide once and for all which of the dwarf-friend elves is the better smith, the two are tasked with making knives they will gift to each other. they both curse the knives. The curses get. Intense.

Unfinished Works

Black Velvet Band: A Curufin/Finrod longfic I abandoned because, after 85K WORDS, I realized I did not like how I had written Curufin. The 'Curufin' in this fic is a good character but too OOC for me to take. I feel like I didn't understand his character well enough when I wrote this as a stress-relief project; shame, because the Finrod content is pretty damn good. I had half-toyed with going back and editing this one, but after I overhauled my entire understanding of Curufin to write Can There be a Name, I knew BVB was officially deceased.

Unfinished 'Young Nolofinwe' Concept: A couple scenes and the outline of a fic that explored the possibility of Nolofinwe being born even after some of Feanaro's sons. This fic would have focused on the relationship of adolescent Nolofinwe with his much odler nephew, Nelyafinwe, who grows close to his young uncle as an act of rebellion against his father, slowly pulling Nolofinwe into familiy and palace politics. It didn't pan out, but the idea was good enough that frankly I'm putting this up as an 'up-for-grabs' idea. Go for it.

The Finwe Polyamory Comedy: I did not write this fanfiction and I know I won't, but I have a full outline of my ideas for it. In this AU, Finwe starts a relationship with Elwe first and Miriel second and refuses to give up either of them. This sets a poly precedent that absolutely will not save the world but will at least lead to some Miriel/Indis.

My Quenya Compositions

I write in Quenya sometimes! Usually short poems (or translations of poems in other languages). Carin, Caruvan above has thick sections of original Quenya, but I have some scattered bits of this and that here as well.
