What is Revolutionary Girl Utena?

Revolutionary Girl Utena is an anime originally released in 1997. Utena is a 14-year-old girl who was saved from the depths of depression and mourning when she was a child by a shining white prince who gifted her a signet ring and told her that, if she remained pure, she would one day find something eternal.

Utena took the obvious message from this statement: she must become a prince herself. Equipped with her dream and her determination, she navigates the strange practicies and shifting power structure of a strange boarding school named Ohtori, where a club of students duel for the hand of the 'Rose Bride', a mysterious girl with the power to grant miracles. All of these duelists wear a ring--the same ring that Utena's prince gave to her. To meet her prince, she fights duels, grows closer to her rivals, and gets to know the Rose Bride, a girl just her age named Himemiya Anthy.

That's what Utena is about, anyway. It's a good show, one that's kept a rabid online following for nearly thirty years now. People seem to just not be able to get over it.

If you've been peripheral to anime for a while, you've noticed a few things about the show: it's the one with the heart-sowrd pull (remains bomb), it seems to be an old 'lesbian' anime (yes, but surprises inside), and something pretty scary happens that fans seem to be reluctant to talk about (yes).

If you asked me to do not a summary of Utena, not of the plot, but of the show, I would say that it's about what happened when you were left alone with him.

If you don't know what I mean, good for you.

Utena Online

It is easier than ever to watch Utena. English subs or dubs are available from the official distributor. Fans, especially the unstoppable Vanna, have been cataloguing where to find the show, the manga, movies, stageplays, and artbooks, translating and putting them all online for anyone to enjoy. Utena is one of the best-preserved and most neatly catalogued fandoms I know of.

Whether you want to watch Utena is up to you. Without spoilers, it is a heavy, mature show that crosses a lot of lines. There isn't pointless shock and gore; it's less Elfen Lied and more Evangelion. It would probably be easier to take if the mature content in Utena was just meant to shock you. Unfortunately, instead, it knows you.

My Fic

I haven't written a ton of Utena fic--some old stuff is lost to the ages, but I've been kicking around with oneshots lately. Full disclosure, jsut about everything here was posted on the Something Eternal forums first, but that was me and this is my website. They're linked to each other.
